Ithilwen is the first child of Haldir and Sílestel, and the first elf born in Ithilien. She is especially beloved by her uncle, Lord Legolas, as she has brought hope for the future of his people. Ithilwen adored her little brother, Halmir. She looked after him when he was young, and taught him the ways of the scouts as he got older. After the death of Aragorn, Ithilwen journeyed with her parents to visit what remained of the Woodland Realm of her grandfather's and of Lothlórien and Rivendell. During her visit to Rivendell, Ithilwen met Elrond's twin sons, Elladan and Elrohir, and became very close friends with the younger Elrohir. When Elrohir decided to leave Rivendell, and go with Ithilwen back to Ithilien, Elladan joined them as well. There, Elrohir and Ithilwen were married and had a son, Eltir.
While her parents and brother left for Valinor on Legolas'; ship (Elladan joined them as well), Ithilwen chose to stay in Middle-Earth with Elrohir, and they became the head of Ithilien. They later sailed to Valinor with the last of the Elves from Middle-Earth.
Ithilwen's name means "Moon Maiden" (ithil = moon; gwend = maiden), and was chosen by her mother as she is the first born in Ithilien and for her passion for the moon. Her Ataressë or "Father-name", Esteleth, means "of Hope"; (estel = hope) and was presented by her father. Elrohir gave her the Epessë, Nifferil or "White Huntress"; (nim = white; feril = huntress), due to her skill as a huntress and a scout and her tendency to wear white fur.
